Erectile Dysfunction and Type II Diabetes: Should You Be Worried?
Diabetes is one of the most dreaded diseases in the world. But if all victims were asked, most of them might say that it is not diabetes per se that they are afraid of but the consequences the diseases bring to their health: kidney and liver failure, heart attack, and erectile dysfunction for men. Among men, erectile dysfunction is the most unpleasant consequence as it attacks them in a way that delivers a personal blow.
What Is Erectile Dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction is not just an ordinary case of failure to attain erection once in a while. This situation is rather common among men with about 75% of men estimated to experiencing such condition. This situation is caused by many factors such as lack of sleep, stress, and excessive alcohol intake. On the other hand, erectile dysfunction refers to the inability to attain erection for a sufficient time to fulfill a sexual intercourse.
Characteristics of Erectile Dysfunction Caused by Diabetes
- Erectile dysfunction, commonly known as ED, is common among men with diabetes. In fact, it is estimated that as many as 80% of men with diabetes is thought to suffer from it. On the other hand, the corresponding number for men without diabetes is only 20%.
- Erectile dysfunction occurs early at the onset of diabetes. While other symptoms of diabetes may occur late or only during the advanced stages of the disease, it is known that ED attacks as early as 10 to 15 years earlier than men without diabetes. On the other hand, if a person is diagnosed with it when still young, there is a good chance that ED will set in within ten years.
- While the name may indicate an impossibility of attaining erection, in reality, men with ED may still attain them. The problem is that they could not sustain them sufficiently to a point where sexual intercourse will be fulfilled. This condition usually brings depression to the couple and can possibly damage the relationship if left untreated. At times, counseling is the best therapy for situations like this.
Should You Be Concerned?
If your diabetes is left untreated, there is a chance that it will deteriorate and cause erectile dysfunction. While this is a risk you do not want to have, there are other consequences that are equally damaging. This includes the following:
- One of the most common dangers is that the blood flowing to the penis for erection flows back instead of being trapped to facilitate erection. This condition sometimes leads to the hardening of the veins that is commonly associated with cardiovascular diseases.
- If untreated, aside from erectile dysfunction, diabetes can also lead to nerve damage elsewhere in the body. This situation will lead a man to experience poor sexual function because communication between nerves is very critical.
- While erectile dysfunction can do a lot to wreck your married life, it is not at all hopeless. In particular, there are medications and therapeutic remedies that can be done to remedy the problem. All that it takes is to acknowledge that you have the condition because many men are afraid to admit it because of shame.
