Proscar is a drug used to treat the condition 'benign prostatic hyperplasia' or enlarged prostate. Propecia is used effectively to reduce hair loss identified as the result of clinically proven male pattern baldness. The drug propecia is known to result in birth defects, especially in the case of a developing male baby. Exposure to whole propecia tablets should be avoided as far as possible. However, medical practitioners the world over believe that exposure to the whole propecia tablets is not really harmful, as long as the tablets are not swallowed. Propecia is known to prevent the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone or DHT in the body. DHT is identified as a cause for the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH and hair loss.
It is advised that prior to taking this medication, you should indicate to the doctor any kind of liver disease. In case of a liver ailment or dysfunction, you may not be able to take Propecia or if at all, then you would be prescribed a lower dose or monitored administering of the drug. Propecia is intended for use by men only. The drug Propecia is enlisted in the FDA pregnancy category 'X', which indicates that it is known to cause birth defects in an unborn baby. Also, women who are breast-feeding should stay away from the drug.
The drug is to be taken exactly as directed by the doctor. However, if you do not understand the instructions, then you should enquire with a pharmacist, nurse, or doctor. The tablets should be taken with a full glass of water, with or without food. It is important to administer Propecia regularly to get the maximum benefit of the drug. The doctor would ideally conduct blood tests or other forms of monitoring during treatment with Propecia. One of the special tests conducted is the PSA or prostate-specific antigen test. This test is primarily done to help detect prostate cancer. Propecia reduces the amount of PSA measured in the blood and inspite of this effect, the drug is used to help detect prostate cancer. While on treatment, if you miss a dose, do remember to take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Never indulge in a double dose. The symptoms of Propecia overdose are not on record yet.
