Zoloft
Sertraline Hydrochloride or Zoloft is a widely marketed anti depressant. It belongs to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor class. The drug Sertraline hydrochloride or Zoloft was introduced to the world market by Pfizer, in the year 1991. It is widely used in the effective treatment of clinically proven depression in adults and social anxitety disorders. Sertraline hydrochloride or Zoloft is also used in the treatment of obsessive and compulsive display of panic. The reported side effects of the drug are the same as those observed in the adminsitration of other member drugs of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor class.
The drug history of Sertraline hydrochloride or Zoloft actually dates back to 1970, when the famous chemist Sarges synthesized a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor called tametraline. The development, however, came to an abrupt end on account of the negative stimulant effect of the drug observed on animals. Years later, biochemists Koe and Welch tested derivatives of the drug for serotonin reuptake inhibition and from there, they went on to prepare stereoisomers. They tested the resultant drug on animals and the msot active cis-isomer was the, developed into the drug we know today as Sertraline hydrochloride or Zoloft.
Sertraline hydrochloride or Zoloft is approved by the FDA and the approval came on the recommendation made by the PSDAC Board. The drug Sertraline hydrochloride or Zoloft is known to be absolutely safe and very efficient in the treatment of depression. The side effects are on record as 'modest to minimal'. Other experts emphasized that the drug's effect on patients is not any different from the placebo or the mcuh criticized poor trials by the drug's original manufacturer Pfizer. 40% of the participants are known to have dropped out of the trials. Until 2003, Sertraline hydrochloride or Zoloft was only approved for use in adults. Now it is also being used in the treatment of children of the ages 6 to 17. Sertraline hydrochloride or Zoloft is being effectively used for the treatment of OCD in children and adolescents. In 2005 the FDA, added to the labels on antidepressants, a black box that warned pediatric suicidality. The drug is now available worldwide in generic versions as well.
The apprehension previously associated with the use of the drug Sertraline hydrochloride or Zoloft is now a thing of the past.
